Gilbert refuses to lose hope that one day he’ll be a country again. He works to assist his brother, Ludwig, in an effort to keep up his knowledge of how to run a country. He may act confident and unafraid of anything or anyone, but in truth, he’s crushed inside.
His friends are what keep him sane. Realizing that his friends don’t care if he’s a country or not gives him greater confidence in himself. He’s the type of person who needs a lot of ego boosting just to make it through the day.
Loneliness is something Gilbert knows a lot about as well as pain and suffering. But he also knows how to have fun. Even if he won’t admit it, one of the things that brings him the greatest joy is helping others to let go and enjoy themselves.

Gilbert gasped for air as he slipped on the wet cobblestone street. He went crashing to the ground but barely felt it as he scrambled back up, looking behind him, red eyes wide as he resumed running. "JUST LEAVE ME ALONE!" he shouted, drawing attention to himself. Could no one else see it?!
"I am you..." the figure whispered, still following him. Half its face was just skeleton. Gilbert grimaced and just ran faster, suddenly thankful that Ludwig had forced him to train. "I can never leave you... Don't you remember me?"
